Reverse Osmosis / desalination Desalination using sea and brackish water reverse osmosis (SWRO and BWRO) membrane technology has become a viable option for the development of new regional water supplies. Reverse Osmosis (RO) is also a widely accepted technology for industrial water purification. Effective mineral and salt removal converts previously unusable waters into a high-purity resource for industrial process uses. RO technology is used to remove salt from seawater through the use of a plastic membrane. RO involves the reversal of flow through a membrane from a high salinity, or concentrate, solution to the high purity, or "permeate", stream on the other side of the membrane. As the pressure loss in the membrane is very low, the concentrate flow, which is under high pressure, can be directed through a turbine which is coupled to a high pressure pump. Thus a considerable amount of the energy that is otherwise lost can be recovered. The most important factor in seawater desalination with Reverse Osmosis (RO) is the pre-treatment that protects the membrane against organic fouling, mineral scaling and chemical degradation. It includes all the necessary treatment steps ahead of the reverse osmosis plant. It determines plant life time and minimises chemical cleaning and membrane replacement. It has a direct impact on plant performance. UNIHA applies conventional filtration or ultrafiltration (UF), dissolved air floatation (DAF), water softening or acidification and disinfection before feeding water to the RO plant. UNIHA Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems deliver high performance at the lowest life-cycle costs. Our pre-engineered systems allow fast delivery and are built with high-quality components designed to meet the customer’s specific requirements. They are assembled at the customer’s facilities under the supervision of UNIHA’s highly qualified engineers and are handed over to the customer ready to run with all filters, membranes, pumps, piping, controls and automation. Additionally, UNIHA provides a full line of membrane treatment chemicals to enhance membrane performance once the equipment is operating at your site. Creative Financing Tools to Fund Water Infrastructure A major restraint on the provision of access to safe drinking water and delivering projects is lack of funding. UNIHA has played a key role in developing a comprehensive and inclusive financing capability that has resulted in the delivery of many projects. Our international reputation enables us to access a wide range of financiers including commercial banks, export credit agencies, development banks and bilateral institutions. One main objective is to provide support to clients for obtaining the funds needed for the proposed water infrastructure investments. Water utility administrators are required to carefully examine the financial alternatives available to them and balance their advantages and disadvantages against the needs and priorities of their systems. We can provide much more than merely financing; we also supply design, consulting, erection and O + M. This allows us to offer services that are tailored to the needs of the location and the customer. UNIHA supplies and makes offers baked by various funding bodies such as the European Union (EuropeAid), KFW Development Bank, ÖKB (Austrian Control Bank), MCA/MCC (Millenium Challenge Cooperation – USA) and EIB (European Investment Bank) etc. Some of our key reference contracts are: Sri Lanka Ghana Cabo Verde Morava Serbia Government Credits Governments provide official financing in support of national exporters through their Export Credit Agencies (ECAs), and they therefore tend to be limited to the financing of equipment. The credits made available to foreign buyers are either sourced directly from the ECA concerned, or indirectly from commercial banks backed by guarantees provided by the agency. The ECAs themselves are strictly governed by international agreements. The advantage of ECA financing is that it is relatively cheap and accessible. Commercial Lending Commercial lending generally takes the form of loans from private commercial banks or publicly owned international financing institutions. The most common form of commercial borrowing for projects is through international bank loans, which are normally syndicated amongst a number of participating banks. Public-Private Partnerships Public-Private Partnerships involve the sharing of risks and responsibilities between the two sectors. It is important to emphasise that the term does not imply any specific financing model, and the actual arrangements have to be developed on a project-by-project basis. Credit Enhancement Facilities Partial Credit Guarantees, which provide cover against all risks for a specified portion of the commercial debt, so that repayments in respect of that portion are assured whatever the cause. These guarantees have been used to encourage extensions of maturity by covering the debt service obligations in the period of the extension beyond what is normally attainable in the market. Partial or Political Risk Guarantees, which cover debt service defaults on loans to private sector projects arising as a result of the failure of the government (or any State entity) to honour its obligations under the project agreements. These guarantees usually cover direct sovereign risks such as expropriation, changes in law, war and civil strife.

E.l.b.w. 2018: How to Maximise the Recovery of Groundwater Treatment Plants Due to the geogenic conditions, groundwater of many localities is turbid and it has increased concentrations of ammonium, iron, manganese and arsenic. In order to use this water as drinking water, it must be treated in suitable plants. This is also the case in the Velika-Plana / Smederevska Palanka (Morava Valley) region of Serbia, where a corresponding facility financed by the European Union for the production of 17,000m³/d drinking water was put up for tender. UNIHA in collaboration with the construction company PORR AG won the bidding process and successfully commissioned the plant and handed it over to the end customer in 2017. The scope of the contract included the planning, delivery and construction of the processing plant, as well as the integration into the existing infrastructure and the training and supervision of the operating staff. The main focus in the planning by UNIHA was the minimization of waste streams and a high partial load capacity due to the discrepancy between current water consumption and design capacity due to the long planning horizon.
